DG U17s lose to Glasgow

The Dumfries and Galloway U17s team lost their West Cup semi-final against Glasgow last Thursday at Nunholm by 39 runs. The Glasgow side batted first and despite a tight opening spell by Steele and Edgar it took a run out by Douglas Brotherston from the boundary to claim the first wicket. That was followed by Edgar taking the first wicket off the bat caught in the covers to make it 29 for 2.

It was then spin in operation as Penrose and Bell and then Brotherston sought to make inroads, and leg-spinner Bell succeeded with two wickets bowled behind the batsman’s legs. However the Glasgow middle order were putting away the loose delivery and Mahmood and Ullah each with 31 kept the Glasgow total moving.

Brotherston came on to take an excellent caught and bowled and complemented that with a direct hit for a run out. Skipper Fraser Conn then took two wickets to help dismiss Glasgow for 168.

After the loss of two early wickets lbw to Parzada the local hopes rested on Richardson and Conn. Those hopes seemed justified as the pair put together a partnership of over sixty until a misunderstanding resulted in the crucial loss of Richardson run out for 32.

From a challenging position of 73 for 2 in the 22nd over the side lost another couple of wickets to the spin of Selby to change the complexion of the match at 98 for 5. Then ten runs later when Conn was out caught trying to force through the covers for a well compiled 41 Glasgow were definitely on top. Despite efforts by Carson to get the score within striking distance the D&G side finished all out forty runs short with seven overs still left.
