DG U13s in great finish at Glasgow North

An understrength Dumfries & Galloway under-13 side travelled to Old Anniesland on Sunday for their first match of the season – a 35-over affair against Glasgow North – and came back with their heads high despite losing by 23 runs.

Bowling first the city boys got off to a flyer due to some clean hitting and excellent running between the wickets but the country lads stuck at it; James Cook clean bowled the dangerous McCallum and the other bowlers, backed up by a good effort in the field, managed to hang on.

Then just before drinks Colin Little came back for his second spell – his first over proved expensive but in no way reflected his bowling. D&G at that stage looked like they might be looking at an awfully big total. Colin’s second over however was a wicket-maiden – the opposition captain fell to ball that was just too good for him.

The last 15 overs were then a good battle – Ewing for Glasgow North made fifty but expired, “going for it” and then Colin, in his third spell, and skipper McBride changed the momentum of the match – the final 4 overs going for only 5 runs.

For D&G to win, the top-order would have had to have done it. And they were not far away from doing it. If one went by the way that the opposition had whole team confabs between overs they certainly thought that the case. Ross Crawford timed the ball sweetly and made 28 attractive runs and Chris McBride looked the part with 20.

At drinks – after 20 overs – they were 85 for 2, which was only 7 runs worse off than Glasgow had been at the same stage. But when Colin Little, the batsman, was beaten by a slower ball, the writing was on the wall. The bowling proved too accurate and the late order was not able to support Fraser Strachan enough to push the team over the line. Fraser’s 38 however earned him the player-of-the-match award. He entered the arena in the fifth over and was still there at the end – having played some wonderful shots and having got his side into a possible match-winning position.

Glasgow North 149 for 7 (C McBride 1/12, R Matthews 1/17, C Little 1/20, J Cook 1/32)

Dumfries & Galloway 126 for 7 (F Strachan 38 no, R Crawford 28, C McBride 20)
