DG U13s overcome defiant Ayrshire

This year’s Under 13 West Area Championship got underway for Dumfries & Galloway’s youngsters at Nunholm on Tuesday with a match against their counterparts from Ayrshire. Having had high hopes in 2008 but failing to win a match hopes for 2009 were a bit more subdued. But proving the rule that cricket is a funny old game the boys “done good” with an excellent victory – a win achieved on the back of an all-round team effort.

Batting first the region’s young cricketers made 143 for 9 in their allotted 35 overs. Dean Brotherstone was the cornerstone of the innings but Chris Lumb, Gregor Masterton, Fraser Strachan, Chris McBride, Douglas Hubbert and Niall Alexander all made significant contributions to the total and Andrew Geddes, batting at eleven made sure that there were no wasted overs.

In reply Ayrshire went off at a rate of knots but the Littles of Langholm – Dominic and Colin – kept taking wickets – 5 in all and when 10-year-old Chris McBride came on to take 3 wickets in his first 2 overs Ayrshire were deep in trouble at 64 for 8. Niall Alexander was brought back and quickly took the ninth wicket and the game was in the bag – NOT. Morgan was up to the task of seeing him off and then with Rao, who had been watching the lemmings at the other end, put the D&G boys under severe pressure. They put on 45 for the tenth wicket and were only defeated by a sharp piece of fielding and direct hit from young Chris when thinking of a quick single.
