DG U13 League: Langholm Lightning strikes

Langholm Lightning gained revenge on LL Thunder after their early season defeat with a win on the midgie infested Castleholm. The game was played on Wednesday night with a 16/16 format.

LL Thunder won the toss and put Lightning in to bat. They soon lost an early wicket with McCulloch (0) clean bowled by Cook. Goodfellow joined Masterton at the wicket and the score moved along steadily, mainly thanks to some wayward bowling from the Thunder. Goodfellow (1) was run out in the 5th over with score on 18. A good partnership of 20 between Masterton (7) and Fletcher (5) meant that the Lightning were 40/4 after 11 overs and looking to make the most of the last 5 overs. They managed 28 runs with D.Little (5no) and C.Little (4). Langholm Lightning finished on 68/6 off their 16 overs. In the bowling J.Cook had 3-15 from 4 overs and R.Rae 1-21 from 4 overs.

So, LL Thunder needed 69 and to win and they could not have got off to a worse start. After 6 overs they were 16/5, Colin Little picked up two wickets in his first over and there was also a wicket each for D.Little, Stewart and Fletcher. LL Thunder just couldn’t get going and the game looked over when they were reduced to 33/8 from 11 overs. This meant that they needed 36 from 5 overs with Dane Massey and Calum Bell both batting for the second time. They had obviously learned a lot from their first innings and they started to pile on the runs. They had taken the score up to 54/8 after 14 overs. However, when Bell (17) was clean bowled by D.Little the game was over and Massey (13no) was left frustrated. LL Thunder finished on 65/9 off their 16 overs. In the bowling C.Little had 3-17 from 5 overs, D.Little 3-20 from 4 overs and L.Stewart 2-4 from 3 overs.

Another close game with an exciting finish.
