DG U13 League: High Scoring Tussle at Nunholm

Week 3 of the D&G Junior Cricket League took place last Sunday with Langholm Lightning taking on Dumfries Injuns and the Cowboys hosting Langholm/Lockerbie Thunder.

It was a high-scoring affair at Nunholm – Niall Alexander confirming all-rounder status with a magnificent unbeaten half-century in a score of 152 for 4 in the 20 overs. It was his captain, Adam Lawrie however, who had set the foundation with some superb running between the wicket in his score of 35. And it was Chris Berry who made the total unassailable by hitting a quick-fire 23 not out. For the Thunder Callum Bell and James Cook can be happy with their performances – both taking 2 for 41 from 6 overs each.

In reply Thunder scored a creditable 113 for 6 – the innings was held together by Stuart Murray with 22no and he was ably supported by Ross Rae (19), unlucky to be run-out to excellent fielding, and James Cook who peppered the square-leg boundary for his 22 runs. It was Niall Alexander who did the damage but it was Douglas Hubbert who took the wickets – 3 for 11.

At Castleholm runs were at more of a premium but the game was just as entertaining and hard-fought. It was the Injuns who batted first and the Lightning team must have fancied their chances of overtaking the 63 runs set for them. But almost error-free fielding and some very good bowling proved too much for the Langholm team and they had to settle for 49 all out.

Connor Bowie, Chris McBride and Todd Rafferty took 3 wickets apiece and Todd capped his performance with a couple of spectacular catches.
