A  fantastic team effort saw the Dumfries & Galloway under 15 cricket side became West District champions despite losing their fifth and final match to Ayrshire. The region’s young cricketers made the most of their resources and got good performances from all of their players. As in any cricket team there are those who stand out more than others but over the week it was difficult to pick out a clear-cut player of the tournament.

On the Monday and Tuesday the D&G eleven were indebted, on the batting front, to Galloway’s Fraser Conn and to the leg-spinning duo of Andrew Bell from Langholm and Anthony Hulatt of Galloway.

These games followed a similar pattern – batting first, Fraser batting for most of the innings and getting a half-century, Arran Seymour blunting the opening attack and the middle order providing the extra runs required to give the bowlers something to defend. In the first match, against Lanarkshire, it was Owen Thompson and Cameron Telfer who did the job and on day two, against Clyde , it was Robbie Carson and Cameron.

The opening bowling attack of Stephen Temlett and John Dunbar then kept things fairly tight in preparation for the two “A”s – Anthony and Andrew – to demolish the top and middle orders, picking up 13 wickets between them over the two days.

On day one it was John Dunbar who picked up the spare wickets and on the second day, Cameron pitched in with a brace. Two comprehensive wins for D&G were the outcomes.

On the Wednesday it was all change. Shawholm in South Glasgow replaced Nunholm as the venue, the opposition batted first and it was the medium-pacers who did most of the damage. Marcus Richardson and Fraser Howard were the batting stars and the game was extremely close but the result was the same – a win for the boys from the south-west.

The other similarity was that it was Cameron Telfer who provided the telling cameo innings down the order. But it was Marcus who was undoubtedly the player of the match – going in to bat in the second over of the innings and carrying his bat and hitting the winning boundary in the final over.

The rain finally prevailed on the Thursday and the match against North Glasgow was cancelled.

On the Friday the boys travelled to Ayr already champions due to their fine performances over the first 3 days. The Ayrshire team had suffered one defeat but had had two games lost to the weather – the same record as South Glasgow.

However a clean-sweep was not to be. Asked to bat first on a rain affected wicket and with a slow outfield against some quality bowling D&G still managed to repeat the batting performance of the first two days except that it was Fraser Howard and Owen Thompson who were the class acts.

However it was a day too far for the bowlers. The combination of a lack of turn and a short boundary counted against the slow bowlers and only Stephen Temlett, of the seam bowlers, was on top of his game.

It was a magnificent performance to win the tournament but perhaps more importantly it was great experience for the team to play a lot of competitive cricket against their peers and it should stand them in good stead. The fielding and particularly the catching was sound all week and every player involved looked like a cricketer.
